RIPLRT team presents fungal-spore and respiratory-health findings at the Alliance conference in San Juan
RIPLRT mentees and collaborators presented research on outdoor airborne fungal spores, asthma healthcare utilization, and respiratory viral incidence across Puerto Rico at the Alliance for Clinical and Translational Research annual conference.
Members of the RIPLRT research team presented collaborative findings at the Alliance for Clinical and Translational Research annual conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Working with Dr. Benjamín Bolaños-Rosero of the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, RIPLRT mentees presented studies linking outdoor airborne fungal spores to respiratory outcomes across Puerto Rican municipalities, including:
- Asthma-related healthcare utilization: how spore concentrations relate to asthma visits and hospitalizations.
- Respiratory viral incidence: whether spore exposure tracks or precedes the incidence of respiratory viruses.
Presenting at a clinical and translational research meeting on the island brings this work directly to the clinicians, public-health practitioners, and investigators who can act on it. It also reflects a central goal of the Institute: to integrate aerobiology, environmental health, immunology, and computational data science while training the next generation of scientists from and for Puerto Rico.
