Adriana González-Candelaria's asthma abstract accepted for a poster at ABRCMS 2026
Undergraduate research fellow Adriana González-Candelaria (UPR Mayagüez) will present her NHANES analysis of recurrent wheeze burden and symptom–attack discordance in U.S. adults with current asthma at ABRCMS 2026 in Seattle, November 18–21.
The RIPLRT Institute congratulates undergraduate research fellow Adriana González-Candelaria, whose abstract, "Beyond a Binary Asthma Attack: Recurrent Wheeze Burden and Symptom–Attack Discordance in U.S. Participants with Current Asthma, NHANES 2001–2006," has been accepted for a poster presentation at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) 2026, to be held November 18–21 at the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle, Washington. This year's meeting marks the 25th anniversary of ABRCMS, the American Society for Microbiology's multidisciplinary conference for students in the biomedical sciences.
Adriana is a senior Industrial Microbiology student at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and is co-mentored within the Institute by Dr. Félix E. Rivera-Mariani and Dr. Lorraine N. Vélez-Torres. Her project draws on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to look beyond the yes/no question of whether someone had an asthma attack in the past year, characterizing instead the burden of recurrent wheeze and the mismatch between reported symptoms and reported attacks among U.S. participants with current asthma. The work reflects the Institute's emphasis on reproducible analyses of public health datasets and on the mechanisms of asthma progression, remission, and recurrence — a question that, for Adriana, is also personal.
Preparing an abstract for a national meeting while carrying a full course load takes discipline, and this acceptance is a well-earned milestone in Adriana's development as a scientist. We look forward to seeing her poster in Seattle.
